More Tips for Using ChatGPT Responsibly
Keep It Focused
-
ChatGPT can get confused if you change topics mid-conversation. When switching topics, it’s best to start a new chat.
-
It remembers what you’ve said during a single chat, so you don’t need to repeat yourself.
Don’t Rely on It for Sources
-
ChatGPT can generate made-up or inaccurate references.
-
For reliable sources, use:
-
Library databases
Choose Your Format
-
You can ask ChatGPT to produce content in different formats:
-
Paragraphs
-
Bullet points
-
Tables
-
Multiple-choice quiz questions
-
Code and more
-
Protect Your Data
-
Do not enter personal, sensitive, or private data — OpenAI may use your inputs to improve its models.
-
You can limit data sharing by adjusting your privacy settings:
To turn off chat history and model training (Web):
Go to Settings > Data Controls > Toggle off “Improve the model for everyone”
This also activates Temporary Chat, meaning your chats will not be stored or used for training.
On iOS/Android:
Tap the menu (☰), then go to Settings > Data Controls, and toggle off Chat History & Training.
