Can GenAI Tools Help You Learn?

Although there is currently (March, 2024) no general UCD policy addressing student use of generative AI to complete course work or assessments, students should note and understand the following:

  • Specific Colleges, School/s, programmes or module coordinators may/may not permit the use of generative AI to complete course work and/or assessments.
  • As a student, it is your responsibility to check and review the available guidance about the use of GenAI tools to complete course work and/or assessments in a programme/module.
  • Before using a GenAI tool like ChatGPT or Gemini to assist with course work, you should check with your lecturer/module-coordinator/Brightspace guidelines, to ensure you fully understand what is permitted.
  • Always check assessment guidelines to confirm if the use of GenAI tools is permitted, and ensure you understand any related requirements.
  • Guidance may vary between modules/programmes/schools, so you will need to check on a per-module basis rather than assuming universal guidelines apply across a programme, unless otherwise advised. 
  • Students are bound by the UCD Student Code of Conduct, which states that academic integrity is a fundamental principle underpinning all academic activity at UCD. You must ensure that all work submitted for assessment complies with the UCD Academic Integrity Policy.
  • If you are allowed to and choose to use GenAI, you must acknowledge your use of generative Al.

Taking all of the above into account, it is true to state that when used responsibly and ethically, generative AI has the capacity to boost your study skills, accelerate your learning processes, and help you explore new ways to learn and adapt to a future in the digital world.
