How to Access ChatGPT

On April 1st 2024, OpenAI announced that it was possible to use ChatGPT instantly, without needing to sign-up. One caveat was that this option was being rolled out gradually, and non-registered users will not have access to the same range of features (e.g. save chats) as registered users. Check if the ‘no sign-up’ option is available to you at Start Using ChatGPT Instantly

If the ‘no sign-up option’ is unavailable, the steps (provided by ChatGPT, 11/01/2024) to registering with OpenAI are as follows:

  1. Go to the OpenAI website (www.openai.com).
  2. Sign Up: Look for a sign-up button, usually located in the top right corner of the website.
  3. Enter Your Details: You will be prompted to enter personal information such as your name, email address, and possibly a phone number. Fill in these details accurately.
  4. Create a Password: Choose a strong and secure password for your account.
  5. Verification Process: OpenAI may require you to verify your email address and/or phone number. Check your email for a verification link or your phone for a verification code and follow the instructions.
  6. Agree to Terms of Service: Read and agree to the OpenAI terms of service and any other relevant policies.
  7. API Access (Optional): If you need access to OpenAI’s API (for instance, for development purposes), you may have to apply for API access. This typically involves providing additional information about how you plan to use the API.
  8. Billing Information: If you plan to use services that require payment, you’ll need to enter billing information, such as a credit card.
  9. Complete Your Profile: Fill in any additional profile information that may be required.
  10. Explore the Platform: Once your account is set up, explore the OpenAI offerings, which may include AI models, research papers, and community forums.

Remember, the exact steps may vary slightly depending on any updates to the OpenAI website or changes in their account creation process.

You should also understand that generative AI tools may have restrictions on the number of queries that can be submitted to the tool over a specified period of time.
