Important Considerations Before Using Generative AI in Your Studies

UCD’s Current Policy On the Use of Generative AI

As of March 2024, there is no single university-wide policy governing student use of generative AI in coursework or assessments. However, the UCD Academic Integrity Policy (effective September 2024) outlines clear responsibilities for students, faculty, and module coordinators regarding the use of GenAI technologies.

  •  What Students Need to Know

    • Permission to use generative AI tools (e.g. ChatGPT, Gemini) for coursework or assessments is at the discretion of individual Schools, Programmes, or Module Coordinators.

    • You must review the module descriptor, Brightspace guidance, and/or consult your lecturer or module coordinator to determine if use is permitted.

    • Do not assume AI use is allowed across a programme — guidance can vary from module to module.

    • If AI use is permitted, it must be:

      • Used critically and ethically

      • Cited and acknowledged appropriately

      • Compliant with module-specific citation practices

    • If you’re unsure, it is your responsibility to ask your faculty member or tutor before using a GenAI tool.

  • Guidance may vary between modules/programmes/schools, so you will need to check on a per-module basis rather than assuming universal guidelines apply across a programme, unless otherwise advised.
  • Students are bound by the UCD Student Code of Conduct, which states that academic integrity is a fundamental principle underpinning all academic activity at UCD. You must ensure that all work submitted for assessment complies with the UCD Academic Integrity Policy.
  • If you are allowed to and choose to use GenAI, you must acknowledge your use of generative Al.
