Gemini (Enabled at UCD for Secure Use))

Gemini  (formerly known as Bard) is a set of AI-powered tools developed by Google that use natural language processing and machine learning to simulate human-like conversations. It is broadly similar to tools like ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot.

The Gemini web app at gemini.google.com and NotebookLM are available for UCD staff and students to access using their UCD Connect Google Workspace accounts. Gemini is powered by Google’s Ultra 1.0 large language model and is part of Google’s evolving suite of generative AI services.

Like Copilot, Gemini can access the internet to help generate responses. However, unlike Copilot, it does not automatically provide references or citations for the sources used in its answers — at least not in the initial reply.

This image provides an example of an input and output from Google Gemini. The input asks for ideas planning a lecture on research methods in the social sciences.

If you access Gemini from your UCD Connect Google account, your chats in gemini.google.com won’t be reviewed by human reviewers or otherwise used to improve generative AI models.

Important: Google states that to use Gemini Apps with a work or school account, you must be 18 or over.

If you have already read Get Started With ChatGPT, then you will understand how to use the Gemini interface.
