What Is UCD’s Policy on the Use of Generative AI?

University College Dublin does not currently have a university-wide policy specific to the use of generative AI (GenAI) tools in teaching, learning, or assessment.

Instead, decisions are made at the level of the School, Programme, or Module, in line with local academic judgement, disciplinary norms, and pedagogical goals.

⚖️ Principles of Academic Integrity

The use of GenAI must always be grounded in UCD’s core academic values. The following documents remain central:

These outline the expectations for both students and staff in maintaining academic integrity across all work and assessments.

Where GenAI is permitted in student work, its use must be acknowledged and cited appropriately, in line with standard academic practice.

💬 Encouraging Clarity in Practice

To ensure fair and consistent use of GenAI:

  • Communicate clearly with students about what is and is not permitted

  • Embed guidance in module descriptors, Brightspace, and in-class discussions

  • Consider the role of GenAI when designing assessments, particularly with regard to originality, authorship, and transparency

When permitted, students should be given guidance on how to use GenAI tools ethically and responsibly — and how to cite them.

📚 Resources for Faculty

These materials can support module coordinators and teaching staff in navigating the evolving integration of GenAI in higher education.

What about other institutions?

In addressing AI’s role in education, it’s beneficial to consider the variety of policies adopted by other institutions. Daniel Stanford’s review, ‘The Best AI Syllabus Policies I’ve Seen So Far,’ highlights key practices that balance the innovative use of AI with academic integrity. These include clear guidelines on AI’s permissible uses, ethical considerations like data privacy and bias, and specific citation requirements for AI-generated content.
